Requesting an HFS Contract - Current Student

The Request Process is for current students. First year students obtain a contract through MyPennState when accepting the offer of admission or by adding their name to the Waitlist.

Check the Contract Timeline for process begin and end dates and times.

Overview of steps to request an HFS Contract:

  1. Select the HFS Contract(s) you would like to request.
  2. Enter a potential roommate selection.
  3. Submit your request.
  4. Check back to see if you have received an offer.

1. Select the HFS Contract you would like to request:

If a student is eligible to request a HFS Contract, one or more boxes will appear indicating the options available. Check the box to indicate your desire to request a Contract. If you are eligible, more than one type of Contract may be requested at brandywine, Behrend, and University Park.

2. Enter a potential roommate:

  1. Click Add a Potential Roommate to enter one person as a potential roommate.
  2. Enter the Access Account or the first and last name of the potential roommate.
  3. Click Submit.
  • Both students must log on to eLiving and request a Contract. If both students request the same type of Contract(s) and list each other as potential roommates, if either student is offered a Contract, the other student will be offered the same type of Contract.
  • The potential roommate does not need to be the future roommate.
  • If you are offered a Contract, you will have the opportunity to specify the same or a different roommate preference on the Contract.

3. Submit your request:

Click on the Submit button and review your status on the eLiving Summary page.

4. Check back to see if you have received an offer.

Log on to eLiving and view the Summary to see if you have received an Offer. Contract Offers may occur at different times at different campuses. Visit the Contract Timeline on each campus website to view the Offer dates for that campus.

Contract Offers expire after three days. Log on to eLiving frequently to see if you have received an offer. Offers will continue until all spaces are filled. Students will be notified when the process is over.

Accepting an HFS Contract - incoming first year student

Contracts are legally binding once they are accepted and cannot be canceled.

Assignment Process: Students are assigned in the order that they accept their HFS Contract. It is to your advantage to accept the HFS Contract as soon as you decide to attend Penn State and live on campus. Popular housing options fill up quickly. Students who accept their HFS Contract later in the process may be assigned to supplemental housing - a reduced-rate residence hall room that houses more than two people - rather than to a regular double room.

Overview of steps to accept an HFS Contract:

  1. Log on to eLiving
  2. Enter your Housing Contract preferences
    1. Residence Area: Location and Room Type
    2. Roommate
    3. Special Living Options
    4. Meal Plans
    5. Preference Ranking

Contract Summary

The Contract Summary Page displays a student's status for Contract Requests, Contracts, and/or Waitlist.

Requests: Displays any Requests for an HFS Contract that a student may have entered. Different Requests may be made at different times of the year and depend on the type of HFS Contract a student is eligible to request at that campus. First year students at University Park are automatically offered a Housing Contract for the Contract Period of Admission. First year students at other Penn State locations will be able to indicate interest in housing and accept an HFS Contract if housing is available at the time the student accepts the offer of admission.

Contracts: Displays all HFS Contracts for the student. Contracts will be in one of the following statuses:

  • Offered - By clicking on the HFS Contract name, the student may accept the HFS Contract prior to the Expiration Date. If the Expiration Date has passed, the student will not be able to accept the HFS Contract.

  • Accepted - The contract preferences have been submitted and the student has agreed to the Terms and Conditions. The HFS Contract is legally binding and can only be cancelled if the student will no longer be attending classes at that campus. Clicking on the HFS Contract name, the student may view the preferences and modify if prior to the Contract Modification Deadline.

  • Cancelled - The HFS Contract has been cancelled. As per the Terms and Conditions, the student may still be liable for cancellation charges or charges incurred while living on campus.

Waitlist: If a student does not indicate interest in housing during the Admissions process, did not receive an HFS Contract offer during the current student Request Process, or was not eligible to Request an HFS Contract during the current student Request Process, the student can add their name to the Waitlist. HFS Contract offers are made as space becomes available. Students should check eLiving often to see if they have received an offer.

Modifying HFS Contract Preferences

Students who have already accepted an HFS Contract can modify their preferences prior to the Contract Modification Deadline. That deadline can be found by clicking on the HFS Contract name; the deadline is listed at the top along with the Contract Type, Status, and Date Accepted.

Some contracts are Self-Select Contracts and will not have Building, Rooms, or Room Types available to preference. Instead, students will be directed to log on to eLiving during spring semester to assign themselves to their desired room. Students with Preference Contracts may indicate their preferences and will be assigned by Housing and Food Services. Preferences are not guaranteed. You may select from the preferences available, and these may vary by Contract type. If you have any questions, contact the HFS Office PRIOR to accepting the Contract.

Adding name to a Waitlist

Adding your name to a Waitlist indicates that you want an HFS Contract for that option or are willing to live in that area/building.

Students without an HFS Contract at that location:

  • When a vacancy is available, staff will offer the student an HFS Contract. The student will have between three and ten days to log on to eLiving and accept the HFS Contract by the deadline date.
  • If the student does not accept the HFS Contract offer by the deadline date, the Contract Status will change to Expired and the student will need to contact Housing and Food Services to request another offer, if one is available.

Students with an existing HFS Contract at that location:

  • When a vacancy is available, staff will reassign a student from the Waitlist by changing the Housing Contract type.
  • The student will NOT be contacted to verify reassignment. Students who do not want to live in a particular location should not put their name on the Waitlist for that location.
  • Once a student has been reassigned, they may not be changed back to the original assignment.
  • If a student decides they are no longer interested in a Waitlist option, it is their responsibility to remove their name from the Waitlist; simply uncheck the box next to that Waitlist option.
  • Some housing options have a higher room rate. Students should review the current room rates for the Waitlist option prior to adding their name to the Waitlist.
